More needs be done to reduce the number of young people on adult mental health wards

11 March 2014

Figures released today show that more under 18s were admitted into NHS wards only eight months into the current financial year, already exceeding the annual figure for 2012-13.

The figures, published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre, show that inpatient provision for young people has suffered in light of financial cuts to the number of hospital beds available.

"The Department of Health and NHS England must take urgent action and put this at the top of their agenda," says Jenny Edwards, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation. "These figures show that we are currently failing vulnerable young people who are already in an extreme state of distress and MPs should call ministers to account."
