Robert Edwards has spent nearly two decades working in one of the UK’s toughest professions: the prison service. Over the years, he’s witnessed many traumatic events, including multiple suicides. It left him with PTSD and pushed him to the edge.

It is perhaps not surprising that an area of health that has been so systematically stigmatised for so many decades has historically settled for a discriminatory lexicon. Generations of people have grown up in societies that found terms like “psycho”, “schizo”, “loonie” and “crazy” perfectly acceptable.
The concept of me trekking the Great Wall of China was initially just a passing comment from my brother who works for the Mental Health Foundation. I have never been one to decline a challenge, so a couple of weeks later I signed up.
