Ollie’s Race to the Stones for good mental health

Oxford resident, Ollie Francisco will take part in the UK’s largest Ultramarathon, Race to the Stones, this coming Saturday 12 July to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation and wider awareness of mental health issues.

The 100km challenge, Race to the Stones, starts in Lewknor, Oxfordshire with runners trekking all the way to Avebury, home of the 5,000-year-old stones and finish line. The route takes in heritage sites and is set in an Area of Natural Beauty (AONBs).

With 3,000 people expected to take part this weekend, Ollie explained why he is joining them:

"When I was 12, my mum was diagnosed with schizophrenia - a life-altering condition that deeply affected both her and my own mental health. The stigma, the silence, and the struggle shaped much of my life.”

Alexa Charnley, Director of Fundraising and Communications at Mental Health Foundation, said:

“We know that both keeping fit and trying something new is good for your mental health.

“Ollie’s taking on a formidable challenge in the Race to the Stones this weekend, one that requires grit and determination and will be physically and mentally challenging.

“The monies raised will help the Mental Health Foundation continue our work in supporting people at risk of developing poor mental health.

“We want to wish Ollie, and all the runners, good luck!”

In addition to his personal experience, Ollie, who lives near Bicester, is keen to raise awareness of an unspoken issue that affects many men.

“Today, suicide remains the leading cause of death in men under 50, and far too many still suffer in silence, especially men, taught to see vulnerability as weakness.

“To challenge that, I’m running a 100km ultra marathon non-stop at Race to the Stones 2025, raising awareness and funds for the Mental Health Foundation. I’ve also shared my story, in the hope that others feel empowered to speak up and seek help.

“Let’s break the silence. Let’s make speaking up a strength."
