Our comment on the first cross-government suicide prevention plan
Commenting on the first cross-government suicide prevention plan, Mark Rowland, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation said:
“We fully welcome the Minister’s targeted, cross-government approach to saving lives through suicide prevention. For the first time, there is a work plan in place which commits every area of government to taking action on suicide and sets clear goals and timescales. This approach is needed if we are to tackle the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the UK.
“A lot of progress has been made in understanding the risk factors associated with suicide, and it is good to see that the Minister acknowledges local government as having a central role in suicide prevention. However, for local government to tackle this, it is vital that it is funded accordingly.
"Last December the government made yet another year-on-year cut to the public health grant afforded to local authorities. While we fully support the ambitions and approach set out by the Minister today, we urge the government to reverse cuts to public health budgets and invest in the health and wellbeing of the population.”
