Rod Jones of Idlewild

What’s your earliest musical memory?

Watching my mother in the opera Carmen. In must have been 4 years old and slightly freaked out by seeing her looking so different.

What does music do for your mental health?

So many things. Its an outlet for my thoughts and feelings, a way of communication, a source of pride and enjoyment.

Who is the musician who has most inspired you?

There are so many! Too many to pick one.

What’s the best sound in the world? And the worst?

A cat purring. A knife on a plate.

What song is in your head just now?

One I’m making up as we speak.

Please tell us about (and share) a piece of music that has had an impact on your mental health.

Probably “Splinter”. The song was written by James Graham and Scott Hutchison during the making of the Fruit Tree album myself and Emma Pollock curated. It summed up the collaboration and is just beautiful. It brings back happy memories, pride and a sense of accomplishment.
