Self-Management Training in Lambeth and Southwark
In 2013, Lambeth and Southwark Mind ran three courses for people experiencing mental health issues, facilitated by the Mental Health Foundation. The self-management courses helped to increase problem-solving skills, boost confidence and promote independence from psychiatric services.
Self-management has been shown to help individuals manage struggles related to mental and physical wellbeing by setting and achieving their own goals using the techniques taught in these sessions.
Learning planning and problem-solving techniques enables individuals to understand more about how to manage their own wellbeing, and improve their quality of life. After taking similar courses, people have reported benefits including:
- Feeling more control of distress
- An increased feeling of confidence
- Healthier lifestyles
- Improved relationships with health professionals and others
- Empowerment to move forward with their lives
The three pilot courses took place between January and May, and comprised of four weekly half day sessions with six fortnightly follow-up sessions. Thirty people completed the courses as part of three groups: a mixed group, a women's group and a BME group.
