The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) are carrying out a major review of the eligibility criteria that councils use to decide whether or not a person receives help from the council with social care services.
Earlier this year the CSCI were asked by Care Services Minister, Ivan Lewis, to look at how the system for deciding who qualifies for support from local councils could be improved.
The Minister’s request came after the CSCI launched their third annual State of social care report in January. The report found that there is a sharp divide between people who do and do not qualify for social care.
The current system used by councils to determine access to social care services is called ‘Fair Access to Care Services’ (FACS). The CSCI aim to make recommendations on how this system could change to meet the Government’s vision of more personalised social care services.

Rethink are running a survey about experiences of treatment for mental illness, with a view to using the data to support the campaign Opening Doors. The focus of this campaign is access to care and treatment, but also choice in treatment and sharing information with mental health service users and carers.
Guidelines for treating mental illness are produced by the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE). The guidelines for treatment of schizophrenia were written in 2002 and are currently being updated.
These guidelines recommend certain methods for treatment, including medication and other therapies. They are not a legal document, but health professionals are meant to follow them where possible.
Rethink wants to make sure that when guidelines are written, issues that are important to the people who will be affected by the guidelines are also included
Rethink wants to know about your experiences of being treated for mental illness - what works for you and what doesn't? We need to know so that we can campaign for the best treatments.
