1 February 2011 - The Scottish Development Centre for Mental Health (SDC) is to become part of the Mental Health Foundation in Scotland from the 1st February 2011.
In a move designed to create a stronger third sector voice for mental health in Scotland, the merger brings together a combined 75 years’ experience of improving mental health policy and practice in Scotland.
Isabella Goldie, Head of Mental Health Programmes at the Mental Health Foundation Scotland said:
“The Mental Health Foundation has always been committed to working in partnership and has worked closely with SDC on a range of successful projects over the years. I have always had a great deal of respect for the work of the SDC and its contribution to improving mental health in Scotland, so I believe that by combining the skills and strong evidence-based approach of both charities, there is an opportunity to make an even greater impact on the quality and accessibility of mental health services in Scotland, helping us all lead mentally healthier lives”.
Peter McTiernan, Chair of the Board of Directors at the SDC, said:
“We are very excited to be joining forces with such a highly-respected organisation whose principles and aims are so closely aligned with our own. This merger provides us with an even broader range of mental health expertise and experience to share with our partner organisations, and with which to work towards achieving our vision of better mental health and wellbeing for all sections of the Scottish population”.
Margaret Maxwell, Professor of Mental Health at the University of Stirling's Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions Research Unit said:
"I have worked with the SDC for many years and see their merger with the Mental Health Foundation as an excellent move for both organisations. Combining their skills and experience in research and development will only strengthen the opportunities to engage in work that helps shape public and patient led care, treatment and services. This further confirms the Mental Health Foundation as the leading charity for mental health research and development in Scotland."
