We're offering free self-management courses in Wales this summer

This summer our free self-management courses for people with a long-term mental health condition run throughout Wales for the second year.

An estimated 600,000 people across Wales – around 1:4 of the adult population may have a mental health problem at any one time. As a result, and thanks to the support of the Big Lottery Fund Cymru, we developed a self-management training course, which was designed and is being delivered by people who have personal experience of mental health issues. Having already delivered 22 courses throughout Wales, the self-management training has been incredibly successful in helping people with a variety of diagnoses experience improved self-confidence, reduced feelings of isolation and take more control of their own condition.  

The self-management training involves a two-day self-management workshop, followed by six half-day sessions over two months. Participants can then become part of a peer-support group, sharing and solving problems together, socialising and practicing self-management skills. This year we will also be launching our first Welsh language courses to make the course even more widely accessible. During 2011 MDF the Bipolar Organisation are also delivering a further 8 of their self-management courses to people with bipolar for us as part of this project.

We are using our experience of self-management training to develop evidence based practice that will be applicable to people with a range of severe psychiatric diagnoses.
