The Mental Health Foundation is IPC’s charity of the year

16 February 2010

IPC Media has chosen the Mental Health Foundation as its charity of the year for 2010. More than half of voting employees chose the winner from four shortlisted causes.

In 2009, IPC Media raised a record £40,000 for its charity of the year and will be organising a range of fundraising events throughout 2010 to support the Mental Health Foundation. Part of the money raised will pay for the creation of a free online service for the general public, which will provide simple advice to those wanting to know how to help a friend, loved one or colleague in a crisis. It supports the charity’s ‘Mental Health First Aid for All’ campaign.

Cheryl Armitage, Trusts and Corporate Manager at the Mental Health Foundation, said:

“We are delighted to have been chosen as IPC’s charity of the year. The staff will be raising money for an important cause, and will enable the Foundation to build an online Mental Health First Aid tool that will help people feel more confident about how to respond to a friend, relative or colleague in distress.”

The online resource will be based on the five basic steps of Mental Health First Aid, which are to:

  • Assess risk of suicide or self-harm

  • Listen non-judgmentally

  • Give reassurance and information

  • Encourage the person to seek help, if appropriate

  • Encourage self-help strategies

Simon Denny, who works at IPC Media and campaigned for the Mental Health Foundation to be charity of the year 2010, said:

“This partnership provides a really good opportunity to raise awareness about mental illness. It can have such a devastating effect on the lives of sufferers and their families yet people rarely talk about it openly. One in four people experience a mental health problem each year and as well as raising awareness of that among IPC staff, I’ll be campaigning for many of our magazines and websites to cover the issues.”
