In response to the Marmot Review - Fair Society, Healthy Lives - Dr Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the UK charity, the Mental Health Foundation, said:
“We have known for a long time that that social inequalities are a common cause of mental health problems. We now need concerted action to address poor mental health in our deprived communities.
“Mental health can be affected by a number of different lifestyle and social factors such as diet, exercise, employment and housing. With policy reform, these are things that can be influenced and better outcomes achieved for individuals, families and communities. Taking action to address these issues could change the lives of generations to come.
“The review makes a number of sound recommendations and we wholeheartedly support evidence-based solutions that provide support to young children and their families such as parenting classes. Prevention and early intervention is always favourable to tackling mental health problems later, when they can become entrenched and harder to treat.”
