Mental Health Foundation welcomes Foresight report

22 October 2008

In response to Mental Capital and Wellbeing: Making the most of ourselves in the 21st century, a report published today by Foresight, the Government’s futures think tank, Dr Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said:

“This report is the most significant that we have seen in years. It recognises that mental health applies to everybody, not just those with a mental illness.

“It is imperative that the evidence in this report is seen by all within government and considered when funding decisions are made. Mental health has often been neglected because, until now, the wider relevance of mental health to the general population has not been fully understood.

“We particularly welcome the attention the report draws to the strong link between debt and mental illness. This is particularly important in the current economic climate as it shows how social factors cause mental illness. The study is ground-breaking because for the first time the government has integrated biological and social science to scope the future of mental health.”
