Mental Health Foundation welcomes Government plans to help people with mental health problems find and keep work

27 November 2007

Moira Fraser, Head of Policy at the charity, today said:

“This announcement shows that the Government has been listening. Giving more GPs access to employment advisers within surgeries, thus providing joined-up services is a sensible move and should help GPs better support people with mental health problems stay in work, or access employment when they feel ready.

“Looking ahead, GP surgeries should also be a place in which people with mental health problems can access advice and support about money, housing and parenting – other areas that often directly affect a person’s mental health.

“Piloting a new advice and support service for smaller businesses is urgently needed. Most workplaces are not yet geared up to support people with mental health problems seeking employment and need clear guidance about how to engage with individuals who have mental health problems.

“When the government’s new plans are rolled out, care must be taken to ensure that people with mental health problems are supported to find appropriate jobs. Individuals must not be coerced into unsuitable employment.”
