In response to the announcement of £31 million investment in children and young people’s psychiatric wards, Dr Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said:
“We welcome the fact that the scandal of children on adult wards is being attended to. However, by investing in this area, we need to be careful not to shift the focus away from early intervention and treating young people whenever possible in an outpatient, primary care, or schools setting. Not one child should be unnecessarily treated as an inpatient, when there are such strong arguments for young people’s problems being addressed outside hospital.”
