Renowned photographer creates artwork for charity’s Mental Health Action Week

Sunday 8 - Saturday 14 April 2007

News Release, 12 March 2007

The Mental Health Foundation has worked with the photographer Spencer Rowell to create a series of posters for its Mental Health Action Week. The theme for the week is friendship and mental health and Spencer, who was behind the iconic ‘Man and Baby’ poster in the 1980s, has taken photographs of real-life friends, one of whom supported the other through a mental health problem.

To raise awareness about Mental Health Action Week, the charity will send the posters to over 2,000 organisations including Primary Care Trusts, GP surgeries, schools and colleges. The week will also see the Mental Health Foundation publish a booklet offering help and guidance to people with mental health problems and their friends, and a new report looking at the importance of friendship and its positive impact on mental health.

Speaking of his involvement with the Mental Health Foundation, Spencer said:

“I’ve been recovering from alcohol and drug addiction for the last 13 years and associate those problems with mental ill-health. I received a lot of help and support during this time and still do - now I want to give something back. I really enjoyed working with the Mental Health Foundation to raise awareness about ordinary people experiencing mental health problems.”

Dr. Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation said:

“Evidence shows that friendships are important for good mental well-being and the posters will show how people support their friends. We are delighted that Spencer has been involved, he has added a creative and touching dimension to the posters.”
