Mental health nursing review shows potential, but lacks practical steps, says Mental Health Foundation

News Release, 20 April 2006

In response to ‘From values to action: The Chief Nursing Officer’s review of mental health nursing released by the Department of Health, Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation, today said;

"The recommendations of the review are encouraging, particularly the focus on recovery and holistic approaches to care. However, I am concerned that the review lacks the practical steps needed to deliver real change.

The Department of Health has failed to cost the recommendations and set targets for implementation. We need to know how this review will make a difference to the lives of people with mental health problems. The paper also fails to make radical recommendations concerning acute inpatient care, suggesting the need for a fundamental rethink. Otherwise gradualism will continue to fail people in crisis.”
