News Release, 19 January 2006
In response to the announcement made today by Charles Clarke regarding cannabis classification, Dr Andrew McCulloch, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation said:
"Criminal law is not an effective way to manage public mental health, but the Government must be as clear as possible about changes in the strength of cannabis, and deliver in its promised public health education programme. How these changes relate to the incidence and nature of mental health problems among cannabis users is an area that needs more research. Above all, the Government needs to work at minimising harm to mental health caused by mood altering substances including cannabis and alcohol, that are very widely available in our society."
