News Release, 28 September 2001
The Mental Health Foundation has produced a new video on how peer support projects can be used to promote positive mental health for young people in education settings.
Peer support - the video, explains what peer support is, how to set up a peer support project and the impact of peer support on secondary schools and pupils, using interviews with teachers, peer supporters and other pupils.
"We know that the first person young people turn to when experiencing emotional difficulties is usually a friend," said Jo Scherer-Thompson, project manager (peer support and schools), the Mental Health Foundation. "The aim of the peer support project was to build on this by training young people in communication and listening skills and also working within schools to make it OK to talk about emotional problems or mental health issues. If we can equip young people with these skills then they will have a better chance of knowing how to look after their mental health throughout their life - and of seeking support before they reach crisis point."
The video was filmed at four London sites: St Marylebone School for Girls, Kingsbury High School, Wanstead High School and A Space, an out of school centre attached to Kingsland School.
