4 May 2007
Dear Editor,
The report from Save The Children adds to what we already know, that the mental health of our children is in steady decline (Modern life has turned children into sad loners, 4 May). Cases of anxiety and depression among children have risen by 70 per cent over the last 25 years and up to 60 per cent of adolescents with a mental health problem will carry that through into adulthood.
The Government must take urgent steps to turn the tide. Parents, teachers and the wider community need to be supported to bring up happy and healthy children. The alternative is to accept a continued epidemic of childhood mental health problems and the consequent long-term suffering which will follow.
Yours sincerely
Andrew McCulloch
