Letter to Community Care

22 October 2007

In your report on the A Life Like Any Other conference (Mental health laws need single act to tie up loose ends, 11 October) you state that I called for a single Act of Parliament to govern mental capacity issues and compulsory mental health treatment. I was actually referring to the situation in Northern Ireland where this may yet occur. A single Act for England and Wales is not something that the Mental Health Foundation is advocating. Having campaigned vigorously for the Mental Capacity Act and welcomed it coming into effect this year it would be disingenuous of me, to say the least, to be calling for its reform so soon!
