Letter sent to The Guardian Society

27 June 2006

Dear Sir,

We need to be careful not to expect too much of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy centres (Spreading a little happiness, 21 June). The centres will certainly help people with mild to moderate mental health problems, but CBT is not a cure for all.

The Government wants to see centres getting people with mental health problems claiming Incapacity Benefit back to work but people on Incapacity Benefit are often living with severe or enduring mental health problems and need more than just a few sessions of CBT. They need a range of treatments and supports over a significant period of time.
