10 November 2006
Dear Sir,
The reason the Department of Health won’t achieve their targets of setting up a child and adolescent mental health service in every region in England by the end of 2006 is because they were unrealistic. (Funding rises by one fifth for youth, 9 November).
Investing in CAMHS services alone is not going to solve the problem; a review is needed of the way that CAMHS operate. GPs and schools should not be sole gatekeepers, instead services should be provided in youth-friendly settings. Unfortunately we’re nowhere near providing effective services that are desperately needed. Increasing numbers of young people are experiencing mental health problems yet three-quarters never get treatment.
Yours sincerely
Andrew McCulloch
