Letter sent to The Daily Mail

4 October 2001

Dear Sir/Madam

It is heartening to see that Cherie Booth recognises what we at the Mental Health Foundation have known for some time - that auricular acupuncture can give a real boost to mental wellbeing.

Our recent research found that people with mental health problems experienced a range of benefits from this treatment, including improved sleep, greater confidence and energy and feeling less stressed. Two women even came off antidepressants, one after six years of taking them.

It is therefore important that auricular acupuncture and other complementary therapies should not be just the preserve of the wealthy; currently they can be expensive and they should be more widely available. When it comes to mental health problems there is no universal solution and no single treatment works for everyone - what does work is having a choice. So let's see more real choice so that more people are able to find out what works for them.

Yours faithfully

Ruth Lesirge
