Letter sent to The Guardian

1 November 2001

Dear Sir

Three weeks ago it was World Mental Health Day, and a Government-backed campaign told people, quite rightly, that it was wrong to discriminate against people with mental health problems, or to use offensive language such as "loony" or "nutter".

Yesterday, so I see from your report, Labour's chairman attacked the Conservative leadership for containing "known nutters".

Surely if change is to come for the one in four people who experience a mental health problem in any one year, we should expect the Labour party to lead from the front? Using language like this will not help and also seems to suggest that there is no place for anybody who has experienced a mental health problem in the frontbenches. An analysis of world leaders, business people and others will quickly show up the flaw in this argument. Perhaps Charles Clark (Labour Chairman) should be the next target of the Mind Out for Mental Health campaign!

Yours faithfully

Ruth Lesirge
