Dear Sir,
While the mental and physical health benefits of Omega 3 are widely known, mass dosing of schoolchildren with supplements is probably not the dietary answer to improving behaviour (Fish oil for pupils may improve behaviour, 12 June).
While a growing body of evidence shows that a child’s diet affects his/her behaviour and ability to concentrate, children need a range of nutrients to stay mentally and physically well, not just Omega 3.
A more thorough approach is needed to ensure that pupils are fed better school meals, and pupils in England and Wales should be given access to free water dispensers again. Water makes up 80% of the brain and is an essential element in its functioning - even mild dehydration can affect learning, performance and wellbeing.
The brain is a complex organ that needs a range of nutrients to function effectively. Supplements are no replacement for a balanced diet.
