Letter sent to Third Sector

11 September 2006

Dear Sir,

In response to Emma Maier (Third Sector, 6 September) I must ask, what is wrong with the term face-to-face fundraising? It may not be inspiring but it is the term used by staff at the Mental Health Foundation and rightly so. We have our own in-house face-to-face team and it would be discourteous for us to call them ‘chuggers’.

As a ‘charity suit’ the word chugging doesn’t raise a smile on my face, but raising money does. And while the term we use isn’t the most important thing, such a label only adds to the poor reputation that face-to-face fundraisers have, which has a knock on effect on how much money they raise.
