Letter sent to The Guardian

4 August 2006

Dear Sir,

The news about alcohol consumption (Health experts warn of English addiction to binge drinking, August 4) though alarming, is not surprising.

Over the last 50 years, alcohol consumption has doubled in the UK and many adults in the UK use alcohol to deal with feelings of stress, anxiety and depression.

While physical health concerns related to increasing alcohol consumption are being reflected in Government policy developments, very little attention is being given to the links between alcohol and mental health, with little debate about why people drink alcohol. It’s time for a more sophisticated discussion.

Dr Moira Fraser
Head of Policy at the Mental Health Foundation
