Recently diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, Lynn has written a poem which he hopes reflects and expresses the difficulties he has with his 'highs' and 'lows'.

My life, and that of my family, has dramatically changed over the last 18 months. Everything that Alan Davies comments upon I can relate to also. My depression has developed from a traumatic workplace incident arising from overwork and lack of care. My depression and has since been diagnosed as bi-polar disorder. So there are adjustments to make to my life - I have to realise that I have an illness (I call it my 'rash' - Winston Churchill called his 'my black dog' - well he is better at English than I am!). My poem below (well an attempt at a poem!) reflects and hopefully expresses the difficulties that I have with my 'highs' and 'lows'.

My family, friends and, importantly, my employers/work colleagues have all been very supportive - meaning that I am still managing to maintain a high level position at work. My champion (or hero) has been my GP, Prof. Richards, who has helped me to survive this ordeal. My wife and children have been truly remarkable - I strive to maintain my sanity so as not to lose or leave them.

I hope that this simple poetic reflection of my difficulties is understood by those have gone or who are going through similar experiences (it may even be understood by their family and friends).

Good luck to you all and remember 'its good to talk!'

HOW DO YOU FEEL TODAY?

How do you feel when you want to run?
Do you feel that you can run ‘like the wind’, or
Do you feel that you have ‘feet of clay?’
How do you feel today?

How do you feel when you need to think?
Do feel that you have clear and clever ideas, or
Do feel your thoughts are confusing and dull?
How do you feel today?

How do you feel when there is a need to speak?
Do you feel positive, articulate and confident, or
Do feel negative, hesitant and doubtful?
How do you feel today?

How do you feel when others look?
Do you see those who love and support you, or
Do you feel ‘well they really don’t care – do they?’
How do you feel today?

How do you feel when others are happy?
Do you share their joy, laughter with much to gain, or
Do feel despair, sadness and a need to cry with pain?
How do you feel today?

How do you feel in respect of the future?
Do you see it as hopeful and bright, or
Do you see only bleakness, despair and more blight?
How do you feel today?

How do you feel about your life in general?
Do you feel it is promising, secure and treating you well, or
Do you feel life is not worth living or is it you just can’t tell?
Well? How did you really feel today!
