Look around you. Did you know 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem every year? A mental health crisis can be triggered by any stressful event – like the death of someone close, job loss, financial pressures or divorce.
These problems can cause real and lasting damage, both to the individual and their families and friends. Destroy careers that took a lifetime to build up, and can shatter the most loving relationships.
For 60 years, our pioneering and highly regarded research involving people who experience mental health problems has informed how the mental health needs of children, adults of working age, and people in later life can be best addressed – how they can get the right information, the right support at the right time – so that the devastating impact that mental health problems can have on people’s lives can be minimised.
We aim to lead the way in helping everyone to understand and look after their own mental health by:
- learning what makes and keeps people mentally well
- researching what will lessen the impact that mental illness has on someone’s everyday life, their relationships with their family and friends, and their opportunities for education and employment
- communicating our findings to a wide range of people turning our research into practical solutions that make a difference to people's lives.
Every year…
- We reach millions of people every year through our work with the media to encourage a better understanding of mental illness
- Over 2.5 million people who need our help visit this website. It is the most comprehensive source of mental health information in Europe
- We send out more than 100,000 advice booklets helping people who are experiencing mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and self-harm.
The Mental Health Foundation is independent of any one stakeholder group, funder or way of looking at mental health. More than 80% of our funding comes from voluntary donations.
