To mark World Mental Health Day 2009, thousands of supporters across the UK took part in a Tea and Talk event to raise much-needed funds for the Mental Health Foundation.
A comfy sofa, a supportive friend and a nice hot cuppa. Everyone knows how beneficial a good cup of tea and a chat can be. Just sharing your cares and hopes with someone else can be great for your own mental health and wellbeing.
All you have to do is get together a group of friends or colleagues, put the kettle on, and invite them to make a donation to the Mental Health Foundation – it’s as simple as that. Arranging your tea party.
Kirsty Wark, Newsnight presenter
"This seems to me a simple and enjoyable way to spread the word that mental health issues will affect us all in some way during our lives, looking out for our friends in time of their distress, our families and their needs, or problems we ourselves may encounter."
1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any one year. The more money you raise, the more people affected by mental illness we can help.
So as well as enjoying a good old natter, you could really make a difference to someone in distress.
You can hold your Tea and Talk party at home, in the office, at your local hall – in fact anywhere you can plug a kettle in.
All you have to do is get everyone talking and ask them to donate. We suggest you ask for a donation of £2-£5 per person but the more you offer at your Tea and Talk party, the more you can raise.
You don’t have to register to take part, but it will really help our planning to know how many Tea and Talk parties are taking place. Register today.
