Claire's Story: Taking part in Tea & Talk enables you to give something back

You never think that you might end up one of the “1 in 4” who will experience a mental illness.  But that is exactly what happened to me. In 2009, after a series of anxiety attacks, I was diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder.

Friends, family and work have been a great support to me however it was a vulnerable and frightening experience. For me, the Mental Health Foundation’s website provided the literature and education I needed. And so last year, I decided to give something back and support them in their annual Tea and Talk event.  I also love baking so it made perfect sense!

It was easy. First off I contacted the community forum to see if anyone could suggest a good venue.  I was overwhelmed by the response. People’s enthusiasm really showed me that mental health is nothing to be ashamed of and is an issue that touches many people.

On the Saturday before the even, I spent ten messy and enjoyable hours baking and icing over 70 cupcakes, brownies, rocky roads and tea loaf.  My friends were a huge help on the day, we successfully sold out of cakes and raised over £285 in the space of 3 hours!

You can take part year after year – people never get tired of drinking tea and eating cake! It was so easy, we are already looking forward to doing it again in 2011.”
