Simon Lawton-Smith, Head of Policy
Simon’s role is to develop our policy in respect to the mental health of the whole population and the support services that people with mental health problems receive.
Simon has been with us since 2008. Prior to his appointment, he was Senior Fellow in Mental Health at the King’s Fund from 2003-2008 and Head of Public Affairs at mental health charity Together from 1996-2003. Before this, he worked in the Department of Health and Cabinet Office for 17 years.
Currently, Simon writes a quarterly Policy Watch column for Mental Health and Social Inclusion Magazine. In 2010, he wrote the Mental Health Alliance’s briefing on Community Treatment Orders under the Mental Health Act 1983 and co-authored an article on the Care Programme Approach for the International Journal of Health Management.
Simon is the Chair of the mental health anti-stigma charity ok2b and he represents the Foundation on a range of Coalitions aiming to influence Government policy on mental health.
Outside of the office, Simon enjoys to spend his time painting, writing, and walking.
