Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities

Father and daughter

The Mental Health Foundation incorporates the Foundation for People
with Learning Disabilities.

Our focus is on improving the lives of people with learning disabilities and their families, enabling them to play a full part in society.

“I do take a lot of time off to take [my daughter] to different places, and go to the appointments. And maybe if she’s not very well, I stay off.”

Most disabled children live at home with their families, with support often directed towards the mother.

A key concern is the poverty and family breakdown that happens when fathers aren’t supported through their workplace, or recognised by services, to actively care for their family.

We are working with fathers to develop flexible policies and practices to recognise the needs of these dads.
