Dinesh Bhugra

Professor Dinesh Bhugra CBE (MA, MSc, MBBS, FRCPsych, MPhil, PhD) became the Chair of the Mental Health Foundation’s board of trustees on 1 July 2011.

Professor Dinesh Bhugra is Professor of Mental Health and Cultural Diversity at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. He was President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists from 2008 to 2011 and was elected Vice Chairman of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in July 2009. He is currently the President-Elect of the World Psychiatric Association.

In a long and distinguished career, he has authored and co-authored over 300 scientific papers and chapters, in addition to over 25 books. He is the Editor of the International Journal of Social Psychiatry, the International Review of Psychiatry, and the International Journal of Culture and Mental Health, and has also been a member of the Department of Health’s steering groups in Public Health and Mental Health.

Recent publications include: Medical leadership in changing times (Asian Journal of Psychiatry); European Psychiatry Association (EPA) guidance on prevention of mental illness (European Psychiatry); and Mental health promotion: guidelines and strategies (European Psychiatry).
